What’s it like to be Captain Chaos?

One question I’m often asked during the eating bit at a children’s disco party is…”what do you do for a living?”

Do you know what?

I have the most AWESOME job in the world!

I’m Captain Chaos (yes dear reader….this is how I pay the bills!). I don’t have a 9-5 job in an office or a factory (although I used to). Entertaining children is what I do for a living full time!

It’s actually a job of two halves though.

On the day of the party, you’ll see fun, adrenaline, action dances, games, loud music, lighting, snow….hopefully it’s all seamless and the children enjoy the party 🙂

But let me take you on a short tour “behind the scenes”….

Captain Chaos ready for work!

That smiling and happy face above with the radio mic attached to his chin, purple wig, and banana silk shirt has done 30 minutes of very hard slog already…and that’s before the guests arrive!

I’ve driven to your venue, unloaded the van of around half a metric tonne of audio and lighting equipment, assembled it and tested it. If all goes to plan – it’s working as it should. If not, there’s around 5-10 minutes of “tinker time” to trouble-shoot any issues.

At 50 years old – that’s no mean feat in itself, but I do it several times a week (it keeps me very fit!)

But it starts LONG before this moment!

It all starts with the horrible and boring admin side of things. I don’t just work at weekends and doing what I do best with the children!

I work pretty much 24/7 dealing with booking enquiries, questions from very nervous and worried parents and all manner of other office related stuff. It’s all very boring but believe me when I say that being Captain Chaos is very much a full time job…plus some!

Trust me, if you’ve got ANY questions on how the party will go no matter how silly they may seem…I’m here for you!

Being there on the day to entertain the children is only the very tip of a very big iceberg!

I LOVE what I do for a living!

Make no mistake – this IS the best job in the world!

I’ve worked in various high powered jobs in the past from consumer finance to software engineering…all of them paying a LOT more money than I earn from entertaining children.

But do you know what? Job satisfaction and quality of life means a lot too!

Being Captain Chaos is hard work both behind the scenes and on the day itself. But in my book…it’s more than worth it to see the smiles on the children’s faces during the party!

And when it comes to the wigs…

Don’t ask! I wrote a post recently about the wigs and how they came about.

They’re hot, they’re itchy (the Hippy wig is a real pain in the bum!), but the children love them so long may they continue!

I’m often booked months in advance and I HATE to let the children down because I’m already booked elsewhere.

I’m good – but I can only be in one place at a time!
